ICO highlights a shift in focus

In their May newsletter, the Information Commissioner's Office indicated that their focus has shifted to calling out poor data protection practices, particularly if they are disproportionately affecting certain parts of society. An example of this is the increase in avoidable data breaches by organisations handling sensitive medical information, particularly about people’s HIV status. John Edwards, Information Commissioner stated “These breaches can have a seismic effect on people’s wellbeing and erode their trust in health services which are so vital to them.”

The ICO have also published new guidance that aims to improve transparency in health and social care. For those working in the health and social care sector it provides useful examples and case studies of how you can be transparent with people about how their personal information is being used. The new guidance is available on their website here.
