Health sector continues to top the list for the number of incidents being reported.

Latest statistics published by the Information Commissioner's Office show that the Health sector continues to top the list for the number of incidents being reported – 19% of all the incidents reported in the third quarter of 2023. The statistics also showed that information being emailed to the wrong recipient was the most common type of incident reported – 17% of all incidents reported in the same period.

The ICO recently published details of a reprimand issued to the South Tees Hospitals Trust last month for a “serious, harmful” data breach when an appointment letter was sent to the wrong address. The full details of the reprimand are published on the ICO website here and it contains some interesting insights into the view that the ICO takes in relation to issues like staff awareness, effectiveness of procedures and mitigating factors.
